Winter wedding in Sicily: yes or no?

Many couples don’t even consider winter months for their wedding because of the cold weather, grey sky, frequent rains or even snow. But what should you do if a “Snow Queen Wedding” isn’t in your plans and you don’t want to postpone your event for warmer times at the same time? You should search for a compromise…

...Here comes the time you look closer at Sicily!

What do most people know about the climate in Sicily?  They’ve heard that it’s terribly hot down here; some of them visited Sicily for their summer holidays and can confirm that. Yes, it’s true – average temperatures in July and August are not so comfortable, but what’s the weather like in Sicily in winter, and will it suit for organizing a wedding? Let’s see…

Winter temperatures in Sicily

Of course, The Mediterranean Sea is not The Indian Ocean with its everlasting summer where you will never need even a pullover. You can compare an average Sicilian winter with autumn in the Central Europe, but not the one with all-day-long rains and constant cold, but a very comfortable period full of sun, when it’s pleasant to stay outdoors.  Really cold weeks come in mid-January and February, when the temperature is between +8+12 C with possible rains, but overall winter on the island is sunny and pretty warm with +13+15 C, sometimes even +20 C! Most of the trees and plants in Sicily are evergreen; some of them are even in blossom! And, of course, winter is a citrus season in Sicily: you will find trees full of colorful lemons, oranges and mandarins. Just imagine your wedding photoshoot in really Sicilian style!

Other advantages

Winter months in Sicily, excluding the Christmas period, don’t look so attractive for weddings to the local couples that are used to summer sun and heat, so winter is considered low season here. This means that organizing your winter wedding in Sicily will save you up to 30% of your budget. Some hotels and wedding venues offer considerable discounts during the low season, and the choice of the available dates is much larger. The only thing to remember is that you’ll have to book your date at least 6 months before the event. Don’t hope that a free venue or other suppliers confirm everything at last minute: they might close for the low season and set off to their own holiday!

Another advantage is that in winter you won’t meet crowds of tourists in the cities or next to the most beautiful landmarks. This means you won’t have to start your wedding photoshoot early in the morning or end up searching for quiet places. This is especially important for popular tourist destinations like Taormina, Syracuse and Cefalu that are overcrowded in summer. Whereas in winter you can enjoy the beauty and calmness of these places almost on your own!

If you can’t stand summer heat but at the same time would like to have a sunny wedding under the palms, then Sicily is right for you! Of course, no one can guarantee that there will be no rain, so you always have to choose a venue that offers not only a beautiful terrace or a garden, but also some indoor facilities. You should also plan your wedding ceremony and photoshoot for the first half of the day, when it’s warm and sunny, and the possibility of the rain is much lower. And if you’re super-lucky and your wedding day happens to be unusually hot, you will be able to move some of your celebrations, like aperitif or buffet, outdoors. You and your guests will surely appreciate such a winter present that Sicily often gives to its guests!
